Preparing for Ritz Week and Performances
Author: Olivia Webb
Ritz Week and recital performances are some of the most exciting moments of the entire dance season. Months of hard work, rehearsals, and dedication all lead up to this special time on stage.
It’s also an exhausting week for dancers and families alike. Here are a few ways to help your dancer feel their best and make the most of this unforgettable experience.
Fuel Your Body and Mind
Your dancer’s body is working hard during this week, and proper nutrition makes a big difference. Focus on foods that provide lasting energy: whole foods, fruits and vegetables, and high-protein meals and snacks.
Try to limit fast food, overly processed foods, and excess sugar during this week. While treats are fun, balanced meals will help dancers stay energized and focused throughout rehearsals and performances.
Take Care of Your Body
Performance week can be physically demanding, so taking care of your dancer’s body is essential.
Encourage your dancer to:
Stretch after each rehearsal
Warm up properly before dancing
Get plenty of sleep each night
Many dance injuries happen when dancers are not fully warmed up. Proper rest and recovery can make a huge difference in how they feel on stage.
Save Your Energy
It can be tempting to pack in lots of fun activities as summer approaches, but dancers should try to conserve their energy during recital week.
Try to:
Limit long hours in the sun
Avoid excessive swimming
Reduce high-energy activities before rehearsals
Your dancer will need their energy for long rehearsals and performances.
Parents: Be Patient
Parents, recital week can be emotional for dancers. They will be hungry, tired, nervous, and excited (all at the same time).
If your dancer missed several rehearsals during the year, their nerves may be even higher. Give them patience and encouragement—they’re doing something brave by stepping onto a stage in front of an audience.
Double Check Your Dance Bag
Preparation is key to a smooth recital week. Before rehearsals begin:
Pack your dancer’s bag ahead of time (see our other blog post!)
Check tights, shoes, and costumes
Make sure everything still fits (Little dancers especially can grow quickly, so it’s always good to check costumes early)
Celebrate Your Dancer
Recital is a huge milestone, especially for young dancers. I still remember how important it felt stepping on stage when I was four years old. My family made it a big deal, and that moment is part of why I fell in love with dance.
Celebrate your dancer and the hard work they’ve put in all year. Don’t forget the flowers. Flowers are a dance recital tradition for a reason. June is still one of my favorite times of year because growing up, I always had fresh flowers in my house after the recital. Even now, I fill my home with flowers because it reminds me of something special.
Isn’t that the goal for childhood? To fill their hearts with happy memories that follow them into adulthood.
Some of the best memories come from the traditions that follow the performance. Whether it’s flowers, dinner out, a special treat, or a family tradition, celebrating your dancer helps make recital week even more meaningful.
Enjoy the Moment
Ritz Week and recital performances go by faster than you think.
Take pictures.
Celebrate the hard work.
And most importantly, enjoy watching your dancer shine on stage.
