Getting Ready for a New Semester of Dance

Author: Olivia Webb

January is here, which means it’s time to gear up for another exciting semester of dance! We truly love your dancers and want them to feel confident, comfortable, and prepared for class each week. If you’re a parent who never danced (or hasn’t danced in a while), it’s totally normal to wonder: What exactly should go in a dance bag? That’s where I come in - I’ve got you covered.

What to Pack for Your Little Dancer

A well-packed dance bag can make all the difference! Here are the essentials we recommend bringing to every class:

  • Dance bag

  • All required dance shoes

  • Extra leotard, tights, and skirts

  • Water bottle

  • Snack (especially if they have multiple classes in a row or are coming from another activity - hangry dancers are a no over here 😉)

  • Hair ties and a brush
Parents struggling with ballet buns, don’t worry! With years of practice, we’ve got this handled.

  • Leg warmers or a sweater
January is chilly, and keeping muscles warm is important!

For Our Pre-Teens & Teens

Older dancers may tell you they’re “too cool” for a dance bag, and while that may sound convincing, being unprepared can be frustrating for both the dancer and the teacher. A consistent dress code helps us ensure dancers are using proper technique and forming correct shapes with their bodies.

Best options for class attire:

  • Leotard and tights (perfect for every technique class)

  • OR leggings with a form-fitting top

Being able to see body alignment is essential for safe and effective training.

Exception: Hip Hop - express yourself! Just one rule: no jeans, please.

What Older Dancers Should Keep in Their Bag:

  • Dance shoes

  • Water bottle

  • Band-aids, tape, or pointe shoe necessities

  • TheraBand (great for strength and injury prevention)

  • Hair ties and a brush

Pointe Shoe Girlies

If your dancer is en pointe, here are a few must-haves:

  • Jet Glue (a MUST!)
When they say their shoes are “dead,” Jet Glue can help extend the life of their pointe shoes

  • Lamb’s wool

  • Extra toe pads (gel pads were always my favorite!)

  • Toenail clippers

  • Mini sewing kit - ribbons will pop at the worst times

Being prepared helps your dancer feel confident, focused, and ready to grow. Thank you for supporting your dancers and trusting us with their training—we’re so excited for another amazing semester at Dance Unlimited.
